Ape-Man: sculpture mix; emerald glaze; copper wire.

I made this mask years ago--Summer or Fall 2008?--and it's about the side of my hand with the fingers outspread.

Cleopatra's Barge

When I was a boy swimming lap after lap after lap, I would imagine pulling Cleopatra's barge up the Nile. When we shifted to sprints, I'd shift to Tarzan attempting to outswim crocodiles. When we slowed down for underwater work, I'd do my best Submariner. When we had to tread water forever, I'd recall Odysseus hanging from the fig tree above Charybdis, his legs in the water, churning and churning.

Postcard: Simian Alchemy

Here's another mask from Summer-Fall 2009: The Ape Man.

Somehow, thoughts of reading and rereading the earliest Tarzan novels (and that comics version of Tarzan the Terrible) when I was a boy led to my making this mask.

Now, Tarzan has the face and profile of an English lord, so this isn't him, but it's something.

That's as clear as it gets.
