Kelp and Star: Otter Cove on a Falling Tide

When I free dive, I spend quite a lot of time checking the crevices and crannies in the rocks on the bottom. In essence, I tidepool even when the water's over my head. In the above shots, I'm standing, not swimming, and fairly dry.

I love tidepools, love the intricacies of kelp, and find something compelling in that starfish's patience for the returning tide. Something like all that, anyway.

Sunday, January 23, 2011: Rough, surgy day beneath Monterey Bay with variable, generally poor visibility. Sunny and warm topside, but I still prefer to spend as much time as possible, breath by breath, down below. Moving with and against the swells, being moved by the swells: what fun, what fun!

The first, second, and fourth photos feature the same seastar, but the third photo's star is actually the one below that featured star. Is that clear?

Despite the shift in stars, I like how that third photo helps to catch what happens when the wave washes through.
